When an enemy ship uses at least one defense token during a normal attack you may exhaust this card. If you do your opponent must choose one defense token that was spent in the attack, that defense token cannot be readied at the end of the round.
Sensory pits were what ships used instead of actual sensors. In the game if a ship sensed an enemy ship it could double down on damaging it, making the spent defense token rule fitting.
